Tsipras-Lagarde discuss debt relief in Davos

Greek Prime Minister, Alexis Tsipras and International Monetary Fund managing director, Christine Lagarde on Thursday agreed that Greece’s first program review should not be delayed. During a meeting on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum currently held in Davos, Tsipras and Lagarde agreed that the government and the IMF should communicate directly in order to have a clear understanding of each other’s positions.

The prime minister also briefed Lagarde on the ongoing research conducted by the Greek authorities for possible tax evaders that keep bank accounts abroad.

In a press release the IMF noted that it stands ready to continue to support Greece in achieving robust economic growth and sustainable public finances through a credible and comprehensive medium-term economic programme, but only if it was granted “significant” debt relief by its European partners. Such a programme would require strong economic policies, not least pension reforms as well as significant debt relief from Greece’s European partners to ensure that debt is on a sustainable downward trajectory.
