President Pavlopoulos calls on FRONTEX to guard European borders
President of the Hellenic Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos called for the activation of FRONTEX and its conversion into a type of “Europol” to guard European borders, including those of Greece, during his meeting with Alternate Foreign Minister Spiros Flogaitis.
“With migration flows [of this magnitude] the responsibility for guarding the borders also rests with Europe. FRONTEX needs to be activated further for the guarding of European borders,” Pavlopoulos said, pointing out that the borders of Greece and other member-states were also those of the European Union.
He welcomed the position adopted by the head of the European People’s Party (EPP) Manfred Weber in statements to ‘Suddeutsche Zeitung’, saying that “the borders of the member-states are the borders of Europe” and that FRONTEX must take charge of this responsibility.
Flogaitis will represent Greece at the upcoming emergency EU foreign ministers’ meeting on migration.
